Producing Ohio: Creating Our Economy
About Us

Project Description
Producing Ohio: Creating Our Economy is a multimedia economics curriculum for Ohio's fifth through eighth grade students. A dynamic education tool, students explore economics concepts through video, hands-on activities, online resources and print materials. The cross-curricular lessons help teachers provide their students with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed on Ohio ’s academic tests.

Project Objectives
An immediate goal of the Producing Ohio project is to prepare both teachers and students for success on the economics items contained in the Social Studies portion of Ohio's academic tests.

A long-range goal is to provide materials and instruction that will help fourth through eighth grade teachers provide their students a more thorough and meaningful understanding of basic economics concepts. This knowledge will help students make decisions about careers and their role in the community. As students work through the lessons and activities, they will learn many lifelong skills necessary to become effective decision makers. Students will also acquire a working knowledge of the key economics concepts contained in Ohio ’s academic tests.

Most importantly, students will learn to become critical thinkers, information and data gatherers, rational decision makers and effective participants in the economy.

Project Overview
Through funding provided by the Ohio Educational Telecommunications Network Commission, the Economics Center for Education & Research at the University of Cincinnati and CET have combined their research, content and technological expertise to provide a unique learning opportunity for teachers and students. Each Producing Ohio lesson approaches economics concepts from several different perspectives, integrating learning through interactive activities and technology. Through the lessons, the teacher will integrate economics across the curriculum, incorporating reading, writing, mathematics and science. Students will study economics through the Ohio industries of agriculture, manufacturing, technology and services. The lessons in the guide are based on real-life examples, using products found in the home. Students can then easily understand and relate to economic concepts as they are presented.
