Producing Ohio FAQ

Where can I get the kit?

How much does the Producing Ohio kit cost?
The kit costs $65.00. Checks, Purchase Orders, or Visa, Mastercard or Discover credit cards are accepted; checks should be made payable to CET.

What is in the kit?
Producing Ohio kit includes audio, visual and hands-on resources:

  • the Teacher Guide with transparencies;
  • two videotapes containing five instructional videos;
  • Hands-on materials, including:
  • an interactive K'NEX Building Set,
  • a pack of "Ohio Buyer" cards and a pack of "Ohio Seller" cards,
  • a world map for use in the classroom,
  • a set of overhead markers, and
  • two classroom posters;
  • Website;
  • Professional development.

Who made the kits?
Producing Ohio is a collaborative project of the Greater Cincinnati Television Educational Foundation (CET) and the Economics Center for Education & Research at the University of Cincinnati. Producing Ohio is made possible by a grant from the Ohio Educational Telecommunications Network Commission in support of the Ohio SchoolNet initiative.

What is in the Producing Ohio Teacher Guide?

  • There are 11 self-contained, hands-on lessons in four economic concepts,
  • An introduction to the economics portion of the Ohio Grade Six Citizenship Learning Outcomes,
  • Spreadsheets of the proficiency correlations for each lesson,
  • Video Discussion Guides for each of the videos,
  • Tips on searching the web and lists of online economics resources
  • The complete text of Ohio's Grade Six Learning Outcomes,
  • A glossary, and
  • Transparencies for instructional use.

Who wrote the lessons?
The lessons were written Douglas A. Haskell, Curriculum Writer, Associate Director, Education Services, Economics Center for Education & Research, and Field Service Associate Professor of Economics, University of Cincinnati, in conjunction with a teacher advisory committee. The committee includes: David DeVore, Kings Local Schools, Kings Mills; Tina M. Ferguson, Felicity-Franklin Local Schools, Felicity; Diana C. Haskell, Princeton City Schools, Cincinnati; Mary Kathleen Lorenz, Fairfield City Schools, Fairfield; and Marilyn Maddox, Cincinnati Public Schools, Cincinnati.

What grade levels is the kit for?
Producing Ohio is designed for fifth and sixth grade students.

Is it adaptable to other grade levels?
Although one of the program objectives is to prepare students for the Ohio Sixth Grade Proficiency Tests, the information in the lessons, videos and activities can be adapted for other grade levels.

Does it teach the information required for the Proficiency Tests?
Each lesson offers a cross-curricular activity involving the economic components of the Ohio Grade Six Citizenship Learning Outcomes. Lessons also address Mathematics, Reading and Writing Learning Outcomes.

What is on the website?
The Producing Ohio website supports the lessons, videos and other materials in the project, and gives students the opportunity to expand their research skills and experience simulations related to economic lesson. In addition to the full content of the Teacher Guide, the website includes interactive lessons for students, activity worksheets, video and visuals to supplement the lessons, and links to economic lessons and activities. The website also contains Professional Development information for teachers.

What is the Professional Development program for teachers?
In order to help teaches create the best possible classroom milieu, professional development programs are offered by the Educational Technology Agencies, in cooperation with the regional Centers for Economic Education. During the workshops, available both live and on the Internet, teachers will be given an overview of the project and taken step by step through each of its components in order to be shown how these components support each other. Course credit is available through the University of Cincinnati, as are scholarships for teachers in Ohio's low-wealth school districts. Teachers can find out more at the Producing Ohio website.
