Corn is Ohio's second most valuable agricultural
crop, right behind soybeans (dairy products comes in at
number three). In the year 2000, more than 3 million acres
of corn were grown and harvest in the state. And those three
million acres produced more than 485 million bushels of
corn, worth nearly $900 million.
In addition to cereal, there's a lot you can
make with corn: cooking oil, gasoline, glue, ink and ice
cream, for starters. More than 3,000 products at the grocery
store include a corn ingredient! A little over half of the
corn grown in Ohio is used for animal feed; 22.6% is exported
and 5% is used for fuel and 8% for sweeteners.
The
Ohio Farm Bureau Federation was founded in 1919 to improve
the quality of life in all of Ohio's agricultural communities.
The organization supports special projects that focus on
agricultural education, environment and economic issues.
Today, its members - over 200,000 farmers and non-farmers,
urban and rural - work to improve rural standards of living,
increase net farm income, and protect personal property
rights.
